For too long, research on non-monogamy, kink, BDSM, and other alternative sexualities was conducted about people, not with them. The Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities (CARAS) was founded to change that.
CARAS brings together researchers, clinicians, and community members to produce ethical, collaborative, and relevant research on consensual alternative sexualities. Instead of pathologizing, CARAS approaches sexuality with curiosity, respect, and rigor.
What CARAS Does
- Community-Driven Research – Ensures that studies are shaped by the needs and experiences of the communities they represent.
- Conferences & Publications – Hosts events where academics and practitioners share findings on kink, polyamory, BDSM, and sexual diversity.
- Education & Training – Offers resources for clinicians and scholars to improve their understanding of alternative sexualities.
- Ethics Advocacy – Pushes for research that protects participants and avoids stigmatization.
Why CARAS Matters for Consent Culture
When research is biased or poorly designed, it can reinforce stigma and harm. CARAS insists that people in kink and non-monogamous communities deserve valid, respectful, and evidence-based representation in science.
This is more than academic: better research means better therapy, healthcare, and policy, all of which directly affect how safe people feel expressing their identities and desires.
A True Community-Academic Partnership
Unlike traditional research models, CARAS emphasizes partnership. The people being studied have a say in how studies are designed and conducted. This ensures that findings are relevant, useful, and empowering — not just statistics in a journal.

By bridging the gap between community and academia, CARAS is reshaping the way research on sexuality is done — ensuring that consent, respect, and representation remain at the core.
