For many of us in consensual non-monogamy, kink, queer, and other non-traditional communities, the legal system was not built with our relationships in mind. It often assumes one narrow definition of family—married, monogamous, heterosexual—and leaves everyone else in a legal grey zone. That’s where the Chosen Family Law Center steps in.

Founded to provide legal services, advocacy, and education for LGBTQIA+, polyamorous, and other marginalized family structures, the Chosen Family Law Center is dedicated to making sure your relationships and rights are recognized—whether the law is ready for them or not.

What They Do

The Center offers:

  • Legal Support – Helping clients with co-parenting agreements, polyamorous relationship contracts, advance directives, and more.
  • Policy Advocacy – Working to change laws that exclude or penalize non-traditional families.
  • Community Education – Hosting workshops, webinars, and resources on navigating the legal system when your family doesn’t fit the mold.
  • Pro Bono Services – Ensuring that cost isn’t a barrier for those most in need of protection.

Why It Matters

If you live in a polycule and want to co-parent, the law might only recognize one or two parents. If you have a nesting partner and a long-term non-nesting partner, the hospital might only allow one person in the room during an emergency. If you’re in a chosen family structure—people you’ve committed to emotionally and practically but not legally—the state may not acknowledge your connection at all.

Without clear legal protections, you can lose access to partners, children, or shared property. The Chosen Family Law Center is working to close those gaps.

How to Get Involved

  • Learn Your Rights – Visit their website for guides and educational resources.
  • Support Their Work – Donations help fund legal aid for people who otherwise couldn’t afford it.
  • Spread the Word – Many people don’t realize these resources exist until it’s too late.
  • Advocate Locally – Use their policy tools to push for change in your own community.

Why Consent Culture Supports Them

Our work is rooted in creating spaces where people can define their own relationships and boundaries. The Chosen Family Law Center is doing that on the legal front—fighting for the right to have your relationships recognized and respected in the eyes of the law.

In a world where laws still lag behind reality, they’re helping people live authentically without having to choose between love and legal safety.
