Contempt refers to a feeling or attitude of disdain or scorn toward someone or something considered inferior, unworthy, or deserving of disregard. In relational contexts, contempt is often expressed through dismissive behaviors, negative judgments, and a lack of respect, which can significantly undermine communication and connection between individuals.

In intimate relationships, contempt can manifest in various ways, including sarcastic remarks, eye-rolling, mocking, or belittling comments. This behavior is particularly damaging because it not only conveys a lack of appreciation for the other person but also creates a hostile environment that can lead to conflict, resentment, and emotional distance.

Research indicates that contempt is one of the most corrosive emotions within romantic partnerships, often predicting relationship breakdowns. It can erode trust and create a dynamic where open and honest communication is stifled. For example, in a polyamorous or ethically non-monogamous (ENM) context, expressing contempt toward a partner’s other relationships can lead to jealousy, insecurity, and an overall sense of inadequacy among partners.

Addressing contempt requires active effort to foster mutual respect, empathy, and understanding, emphasizing constructive communication strategies and emotional awareness to mitigate its negative impact.

Contempt is a strong feeling of disrespect or disdain towards someone or something. It involves a lack of regard for the other person's feelings, opinions, or well-being. In the context of relationships, contempt can be particularly damaging as it often involves a sense of superiority or moral superiority over the other person. This can lead to communication breakdowns, resentment, and emotional distance.

Contempt is considered one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in relationships, as identified by relationship researcher John Gottman. When contempt becomes a regular presence in a relationship, it can be a sign of serious trouble and may indicate a lack of empathy and emotional connection between partners. It is important to address and work through feelings of contempt in a healthy and constructive manner to maintain a respectful and loving relationship.
