The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) is one of the most important advocacy groups for anyone involved in kink, BDSM, swinging, polyamory, and other forms of ethical non-monogamy. They’ve been working since 1997 to fight stigma, protect our rights, and build safer communities.
What NCSF Does
The NCSF isn’t just about lobbying — it’s about making tangible resources available to people navigating alternative lifestyles. Their work includes:
- Consent Counts Project – Advocating to decriminalize consensual BDSM by reforming assault laws to recognize negotiated, informed consent.
- Incident Reporting & Response (IRR) – A system that allows individuals and communities to confidentially report consent violations, harassment, discrimination, or legal issues — and get support on how to respond.
- Educational Resources – Toolkits, workshops, and best-practice guides on consent, event hosting, risk reduction, and relationship ethics.
- Advocacy & Legal Support – Helping protect individuals in kink and ENM communities from discrimination in employment, custody battles, or criminal cases.
- Research – Conducting and supporting studies on BDSM, non-monogamy, and sexual freedom to counter misinformation with data.
Why NCSF Matters for Consent Culture
Consent Culture and NCSF are deeply aligned: both recognize that consent is not just personal, but political. Stigma against kink and non-monogamy often leads to people being silenced, misrepresented, or punished for their identities and relationships.
By fighting for recognition of consensual kink as a valid form of intimacy, and by providing real-world support when consent violations occur, the NCSF helps create safer, more resilient communities.
A Bridge Between Communities and Institutions
NCSF plays a unique role as a bridge:
- Between local kink/ENM communities and national policy makers
- Between individuals harmed and the resources they need
- Between researchers and the people living these realities every day
It’s this position that allows them to protect our rights while also empowering us to hold ourselves accountable.
